Tired of feeling like you have to choose between your fitness goals and enjoying a social life? Wondering how to navigate alcohol consumption while building your ideal physique? In today’s episode, Jordanna is sitting down with transformation coach Beckie McLeaming, who shares her journey from being a casual drinker to discovering the perfect balance between social drinking and achieving her fitness goals.

As a former hospitality professional turned fitness expert, Beckie brings a unique perspective on maintaining a social lifestyle while still prioritizing fitness and performance goals. Today's episode reveals how to create lifestyle changes that accommodate both your fitness ambitions and your social life, without feeling deprived or missing out on life's celebrations.

Here’s what we cover:

  • The mindset shifts that turned Beckie from a casual weekend drinker into someone who prioritizes performance while still enjoying life's celebrations

  • The "spritzer strategy" - a sustainable approach to social drinking that lets you enjoy nights out while staying on track with your fitness goals

  • The telltale signs that alcohol might be the hidden factor derailing your fitness progress, even when everything else seems perfectly dialed in

  • How to transform your social life from drink-centered activities to fitness-focused adventures

  • The surprising connection between alcohol consumption and next-day workout performance, especially for women over 40

  • How redefining what a "good time" means can dramatically impact your fitness journey and overall wellness

This episode proves you don't have to choose between your fitness goals and enjoying life's social moments. If you're tired of feeling held back by weekend habits or struggling to find balance between social drinking and reaching your fitness potential, this conversation with Beckie will give you the practical strategies you need to level up.

Am I gonna prioritize the bottle of wine? Or am I going to prioritize myself? We need to learn to use the word selfish in the right way. It's okay to want something for yourself than not care what other people are gonna say about you.

The unedited podcast transcript for this episode of the Get Sculpted podcast follows:

[Jordanna] Welcome back to Get Sculpted. Today, we’re having a different kind of chat with my good friend, Beckie McLeaming. Beckie has been a client of mine, transitioned to joining our coaching team, and has an inspiring journey to share. Fitness and movement have always been constants in her life, and today, we’re diving deep into her story, her flexible approach to food and alcohol, and her wisdom for building a sculpted body while enjoying life.

Beckie’s Career Journey

[Jordanna] Beckie, you’ve had such an inspiring journey. Tell us about your career path and how it brought you to fitness full-time.

[Beckie] I’ve lived many lives! Growing up in a family of five, I always wanted to see the world. I studied hospitality and communications, worked in hotels, cruise lines, and as a flight attendant. Later, I transitioned to human resources, even earning a postgrad in HR. But after being laid off from a hotel in Toronto, I decided to pursue something I’d always dreamed of: becoming a personal trainer.

Shifting to Fitness Full-Time

[Jordanna] At what point did you rethink your relationship with food, alcohol, and fitness?

[Beckie] It wasn’t easy. Growing up in hospitality, food and social drinking were big parts of my life. But as I aged, I realized these habits held me back. The change didn’t happen overnight—it took trial and error. I found ways to balance being social while staying aligned with my fitness goals.

Beckie’s Flexible Approach to Alcohol

[Jordanna] How did you find a way to balance social drinking with your fitness goals?

[Beckie] I developed what I call the “spritzer strategy”: mixing wine with sparkling water. It lets me enjoy the taste while significantly cutting down on alcohol. I’ve also embraced setting weekly limits and planning ahead for social situations. Now, I rarely feel the negative effects of alcohol, and my fitness performance is better for it.

[Jordanna] We work with clients to create awareness around habits, whether it’s food or alcohol. Your strategy is such a practical way to maintain balance.

Alcohol’s Impact on Fitness

[Jordanna] How does alcohol affect fitness performance?

[Beckie] Alcohol slows recovery, impacts metabolism, and leaves you feeling lethargic. I used to skip workouts after a night out, but now I prioritize fitness by planning ahead. For example, if I have dinner plans on Friday, I’ll pre-book a Saturday morning workout to stay accountable.

[Jordanna] That’s such a great strategy. For many, alcohol can be the limiting factor in reaching their goals.

Navigating Social Situations

[Jordanna] How do you help clients navigate social pressures around food and alcohol?

[Beckie] Planning is key. Check restaurant menus ahead of time and focus on protein and vegetables. If you know you’ll indulge later, eat healthy earlier in the day. It’s about balance, not deprivation. Socializing doesn’t have to mean derailing your progress.

The Mindset Shift

[Jordanna] What’s a big mindset shift that’s been transformative for you and your clients?

[Beckie] It’s realizing that balance doesn’t happen overnight. Discipline is necessary at the start, but it’s about building habits that make you feel confident and in control. Prioritizing yourself isn’t selfish—it’s essential.

Fitness as a Lifestyle

[Jordanna] Fitness has become such a core part of your life. How has it evolved for you?

[Beckie] Fitness is my life now, but it’s also social and fun. I love doing activities like High Rocks competitions and 10K runs with friends. It’s about combining fitness, community, and adventure. These experiences make staying active so fulfilling.

[Jordanna] I love how you’ve redefined fun. It’s not about sitting with a drink in hand but creating meaningful experiences.

Helping Others Transform

[Jordanna] Your coaching style is so empowering. What’s your approach to helping clients achieve their goals?

[Beckie] I simplify things. Most clients are overwhelmed by trying to do it all. I focus on small, actionable steps around nutrition, movement, and training. It’s about progress, not perfection. And I remind them that I’ve been there—I’ve failed before, and that’s part of the journey.

[Jordanna] What would you say to women on the sidelines, doubting themselves?

[Beckie] Stop overthinking and take action. There’s nothing better than feeling amazing inside and out. Prioritize yourself. It’s not selfish—it’s necessary.

[Jordanna] Beckie, you’ve truly aged in reverse. Your journey is so inspiring, and your dedication to helping others is remarkable. Thank you for sharing your story and expertise.

[Jordanna] If you’re ready to prioritize yourself, reach out to work with Beckie or our team. Remember, every small choice adds up to big transformations.
